United States
The Papillon Club of America standard is titled simply Papillon. It allows either erect ears or completely dropped ears. The dropped form is called the Phalène within the standard. One ear erect and one partly or fully down, or intermediate semi-dropped carriage, is faulty. In practical US breed identity, both ear types sit under the Papillon breed framework.
FCI countries
FCI Standard No. 77 is for the Continental Toy Spaniel. It describes two varieties: the hanging-eared Phalène and erect-eared Papillon. FCI explicitly warns that crosses between the varieties can produce semi-erect ears with drooping tips and treats that mixed carriage as a serious fault.
United Kingdom
The Royal Kennel Club standard is titled Papillon and describes the completely dropped type as the Phalène. Its current registration guidance allows breeders to identify a puppy as Phalène so that the wording appears on the registration certificate and Breed Records Supplement.
These are organizational differences, not evidence that one ear type belongs to a biologically unrelated population. The two forms share breed history and can occur within the same broader breeding tradition. When buying internationally, ask which registry's naming and registration rules apply.
History and original purpose
The Papillon descends from Continental Toy Spaniels associated with European courts and wealthy households. The strongest historical evidence is visual: small spaniel-type companions appear repeatedly in European art, particularly from the Renaissance onward. Papillon Club of America historical material traces recognizable toy spaniels through paintings by artists including Titian and later court painters.
Art is useful evidence that a recognizable type existed, but it does not provide a modern pedigree database. Exact ancestry remains less certain. Older theories proposed several routes of development, including links with Asian toy dogs or reduced-size sporting spaniels. The PCA's own historical account labels early ancestry as speculative. A responsible breed history should therefore distinguish a well-documented European toy-spaniel tradition from claims that a precise ancient cross is proven.
The drop ear came first
Historical artwork overwhelmingly shows the earlier Continental Toy Spaniel with dropped ears. The erect butterfly ear became fashionable much later, particularly toward the end of the nineteenth century. France and Belgium

This is more defensible than assigning the modern Papillon to one single royal court or one individual historical breeder.
Recognition in the English-speaking world
The breed reached Britain in the early twentieth century and gained an organized British club during the 1920s. In the United States, the AKC recognized the Papillon in 1915, and the Papillon Club of America was originally formed in 1935. The breed remained comparatively uncommon enough that dedicated breed clubs became important sources of health, pedigree, and breeder information.
What history means today
The Papillon's past as a close companion helps explain why many individuals are attentive to people and highly responsive to household routines. It does not justify claims that every Papillon is automatically cuddly, quiet, or easy to leave alone. Modern behavior still depends on genetics and experience. The breed's historic social role makes early independence training particularly sensible.
Appearance and regional standards
The Papillon should be small, elegant, lively, and fine-boned while remaining sound and capable of normal movement. Extreme miniaturization should not be confused with breed quality. Neither the AKC nor Royal Kennel Club asks breeders to produce the smallest possible dog, and FCI sets a minimum weight of 1.5 kg.
Height
The AKC standard calls for 8–11 inches at the withers. A dog over 11 inches is faulted, and a dog over 12 inches is disqualified. The Royal Kennel Club uses 20–28 cm, equivalent to approximately 8–11 inches. FCI gives a height of about 28 cm rather than the broader UK range.
Weight: do not invent one universal number
The AKC standard says weight should be proportionate to height and gives no numeric range. The Royal Kennel Club standard also does not set a numeric weight. FCI is more specific: it creates one category below 2.5 kg for dogs and bitches, and a second category from 2.5 to 4.5 kg for males and 2.5 to 5 kg for females, with a minimum weight of 1.5 kg.
Those FCI categories should not be converted into a supposed worldwide “ideal weight.” Frame, sex, muscle, and body condition matter. A pet should be kept lean enough that ribs are easy to feel and waist and abdominal tuck remain apparent without pursuing an arbitrarily tiny scale number.
Proportions and movement
The AKC standard says the body is slightly longer than height and specifically states that the dog should not be cobby. FCI also describes the body as somewhat longer than high. The Royal Kennel Club notes that furnishings can contribute to the appearance of being slightly longer than high. Head and expression
The head should remain proportionate and fine rather than heavily domed or coarse. Eyes are dark and should not bulge. The muzzle is fine and substantially shorter than the skull. Pigmentation is important in the standards, particularly a black nose and dark eye rims and lips.
Bite
The AKC standard requires a scissors bite and faults overshot or undershot mouths. The Royal Kennel Club likewise calls for a complete scissors bite. FCI uses broader wording that the jaws should close well and normally, while listing overshot and especially undershot mouths among faults.
Tail
The tail is long, highly set, and heavily fringed. It arches over the body or along the line of the back when the dog is active. It should not be confused with a tightly curled spitz tail lying flat on the back.
Coat
All three reviewed standards describe a fine, abundant, flowing coat without undercoat. The hair is short on the face and fronts of the legs, with longer furnishings on ears, chest, legs, thighs, and tail. FCI allows a gentle wave but distinguishes it from curl. The coat should retain a silky, elegant character rather than becoming woolly or artificially sculpted.
Color
The AKC standard requires parti-color or white with patches of color and places special importance on colored ears and color extending over both eyes. An all-white dog or a dog with no white is disqualified. FCI admits all colors on a white background but requires white to dominate on body and legs. The Royal Kennel Club accepts white with patches of any color except liver and provides specific tricolor wording. These differences should be respected rather than collapsed into one universal color rule.
Butterfly ears, Phalène ears, and ear carriage
The erect Papillon ear is large, mobile, rounded at the tip, and carried obliquely. Long outer fringes produce the butterfly-wing outline. The ear should not point straight up like a typical spitz ear. In the Phalène, the ear is fully dropped rather than merely tipping forward.
Ear carriage develops during puppyhood and can change while teeth and cartilage mature. Buyers should not treat a very young puppy's temporary ear position as a guaranteed adult show outcome. Semi-erect ears may be charming in a pet but do not fit the formal standard ideal.
Fringes are cosmetic, ear health is functional
Long ear fringes can tangle, collect debris, or become caught in chews and collars. Comb gently from the ends upward while supporting the hair near the skin. Avoid breaking or pulling fringe simply to preserve show appearance.
Redness, odor, pain, persistent scratching, head shaking, discharge, or sudden sensitivity requires veterinary assessment. A clean, healthy ear does not need aggressive routine treatment. Ear fringe length has no medical value if the skin beneath is inflamed or uncomfortable.
Temperament and personality
A typical Papillon is observant, quick, socially interested, and ready to learn. Many individuals track human movement closely and notice tiny changes in household routine. This makes training rewarding, but it also means accidental reinforcement can create persistent habits quickly.
For example, if barking makes a person pick the dog up, staring produces food from the table, or scratching a door immediately opens it, the dog learns a functional strategy. Intelligence does not mean the dog understands human rules without teaching; it means the consequences of behavior matter.
Confidence versus fear
The breed standards reject shyness and aggression. A stable Papillon should be capable of observing novelty and recovering, not living in chronic alarm. Small dogs are sometimes allowed to bark, lunge, snap, or panic because the behavior is physically easier to control. That does the dog no favors. A Papillon can be a good first dog for someone who enjoys training and understands small-dog safety. It is less suitable for an owner who wants a silent lapdog, dislikes barking, plans to leave a young puppy alone for long periods, or expects a tiny dog to require no structured exercise or behavior work.
Family life, children, dogs, and other pets
Children
Papillons can live successfully with respectful children, but the dog's small frame changes the risk profile. A toddler can injure a tiny dog by falling on it, lifting it incorrectly, stepping on it, or dropping it. A frightened dog can in turn bite. Supervision must protect both.
Children should sit on the floor for early interaction, allow the dog to approach, and avoid chasing, cornering, hugging tightly, pulling fringes, or disturbing sleep and food. A dog should have a child-free safe area. Very young children and very small puppies require especially careful management.
Other dogs
Many Papillons enjoy canine company, but body-size mismatch matters. Friendly rough play from a much larger dog can cause injury without aggression. Choose play partners for compatible style and self-control, not only friendliness. Use gates and separate rest areas, and interrupt play before either dog becomes exhausted or frantic.
Dog parks are not necessary for healthy social development. A small Papillon in a chaotic mixed-size park may face more risk than benefit. Calm walks, known compatible dogs, training classes, and controlled social opportunities can provide better experiences.

Many Papillons can live with cats when introduced carefully, particularly if raised together. Individual chase interest varies. Their small body size does not eliminate predatory behavior: a Papillon may still pursue birds, rodents, lizards, or other small animals. Rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, and birds should have secure dog-proof housing and should not be left together unsupervised.
Visitors
Alert barking can become intense at the door. Teach a routine before it becomes a conflict: doorbell predicts movement to a mat or behind a gate, reinforcement arrives for quiet orientation to the owner, and greeting occurs only if the dog is comfortable. A worried dog should never be passed around to guests as a socialization exercise.
Apartments, homes, safety, and climate
Apartment living
The Papillon's physical size is highly compatible with apartments, but barking can be the limiting factor. Hallway noise, elevators, neighbors, delivery sounds, and windows can generate repeated alerting. Stairs, furniture, and falls

A practical adult routine
Combine several short outings with at least one purposeful opportunity to walk and sniff, plus brief training or play. Some athletic adults comfortably do much more than a basic pet routine when conditioned gradually. Others are content with moderate walking and substantial training at home. Dog sports

Puppy exercise

Mental work

That principle is especially practical with a small dog. Physical correction is unnecessary and can be disproportionately frightening. A Papillon can learn precise behavior through food, toys, access to sniffing, play, distance, and social rewards.

Tiny size makes reliable recall especially important because a Papillon can disappear behind shrubs or through a gate rapidly. Begin indoors, progress to secure areas, then use a long line around realistic distractions. Reward generously and sometimes release the dog back to its activity so coming when called does not always end fun.
Prey and chase interest
Despite being a companion breed, individual Papillons may chase birds, squirrels, rodents, insects, or fast-moving pets. Do not assume small size equals no predatory behavior. Use leashes and secure fencing around traffic and wildlife, and protect small household pets.
Alone time
Teach independence early. Brief calm separations after toileting and activity can expand gradually. Brushing and combing
Comb through the coat several times per week or as needed for the individual. Friction areas behind ears, under harnesses, at the armpits, and around rear furnishings deserve particular attention. Work gently from the ends of fringes toward the skin rather than pulling through knots.
A dog in full show coat may need more careful maintenance than a household companion. Frequency changes with coat amount, weather, activity, and bathing routine. The meaningful standard is whether a comb reaches the skin comfortably without hidden mats.

Home cooking is not automatically complete or balanced. Long-term home-prepared diets should be formulated by a veterinarian with advanced nutrition expertise or a comparably qualified veterinary nutrition specialist, particularly for puppies or dogs with medical disease.
Health overview
Responsible Papillon health management combines phenotype screening, DNA testing, family history, and ordinary veterinary care. The current US CHIC framework centers on eyes and patellas plus at least one elective, while the current UK Health Standard prioritizes Pap-PRA1 and genetic diversity and adds NAD, vWD1, and clinical eye screening at Best Practice level.
No single list captures everything that can affect a Papillon. A commercial DNA panel cannot diagnose a luxating patella, current heart murmur, cataract, dental disease, pain, infection, cancer, or behavior problem. Conversely, a normal clinical examination cannot identify every recessive carrier. Good breeding programs use different tools for different questions.
Screening is risk reduction, not a guarantee
A puppy from tested parents can still develop disease. Polygenic and complex conditions are not eliminated by one mating, new mutations occur, many diseases have no validated DNA test, and some disorders appear late. Ask about older relatives and previous offspring, not only the parents' certificates.
Emergency signs
Seek urgent veterinary care for collapse, breathing difficulty, severe or prolonged bleeding, repeated seizures, sudden inability to walk, major trauma, suspected poisoning, marked eye pain, heat illness, or persistent weakness. Do not wait for a breed-specific diagnosis when a dog is acutely ill.
Patellar luxation
The patella is the kneecap. In patellar luxation it moves out of its normal groove, most commonly toward the inside of the knee in small dogs. Severity ranges from an intermittently movable kneecap with little obvious disability to permanent displacement with limb deformity and significant functional problems.
What an owner may notice
A dog may briefly skip on a hind leg, hold a leg up for several steps, then return to normal. More severe disease can cause persistent abnormal gait, pain, crouched posture, reduced jumping, or progressive orthopedic change. Similar signs can come from cruciate disease, hip pain, trauma, or neurologic problems, so hopping is not a diagnosis by itself.
US breeding evaluation
Patellar evaluation is one of the two fixed phenotype requirements in the current PCA CHIC program. OFA certification for a normal patella is issued at 12 months of age or older. The dog is examined awake, and OFA recommends periodic re-examination because some luxations are not apparent early in life.
What screening can and cannot do
A normal result tells you the patella was clinically normal at that examination. It does not guarantee the knee will remain normal forever and does not measure every component of hindlimb structure. Breeders should combine results with gait, relatives, offspring, and avoidance of repeated selection for extremely tiny or structurally weak dogs.
Treatment
Management depends on grade, clinical signs, age, skeletal change, and the individual dog. Some mild cases are monitored; clinically important cases may require orthopedic surgery. Treatment decisions belong with a veterinarian or veterinary surgeon after examination and imaging where appropriate.
Eye health and Pap-PRA1
Progressive retinal atrophy describes inherited retinal degenerations in which photoreceptor function progressively declines. Early signs can include difficulty seeing in dim light, hesitancy in dark rooms, or reduced confidence at night. As degeneration advances, daylight vision can also be affected.
The Papillon-specific CNGB1 discovery
A 2013 peer-reviewed study mapped a late-onset PRA in Papillons and Phalènes. The initial mapping cohort included six affected dogs—four Papillons and two Phalènes—and 14 eye-examined controls older than seven years. Researchers identified a frameshift mutation in CNGB1.
All six affected dogs in the mapping cohort were homozygous for the mutation. The researchers then genotyped a larger group, including 145 additional Papillons and Phalènes, and found strong association between the variant and disease. Four homozygous dogs in that broader screen were not all clinically diagnosed at the time; two had been examined at only one to two years of age, well before typical onset. That finding illustrates why late-onset disease can make young “normal” dogs misleading.
The same paper reported a 17.2% carrier frequency in that selected broader sample. This guide does not present that figure as the current worldwide carrier prevalence. Sampling, geography, breeding selection, and more than a decade of DNA testing can change population frequencies.
Inheritance
Pap-PRA1 is treated as autosomal recessive in current Royal Kennel Club guidance. A carrier has one tested variant copy and is not expected to develop this specific recessive form, but can transmit it. A dog with two copies is genetically at risk for the variant-associated disease.
Why clinical eye examinations still matter
A Pap-PRA1 DNA test addresses one known genetic form of retinal degeneration. It does not rule out cataract, retinal dysplasia, trauma, inflammation, glaucoma, corneal disease, or an inherited eye disorder caused by another gene. This is why the US CHIC program still requires CAER eye examination and the UK Best Practice list includes the BVA/RKC/ISDS Eye Scheme.
Sudden vision loss, a painful red eye, marked squinting, or cloudiness should be treated as a clinical problem and assessed promptly rather than waiting for DNA results.
Neuroaxonal dystrophy (NAD-PLA2G6)
Neuroaxonal dystrophy is a serious inherited neurodegenerative disease described in Papillons. It affects the nervous system and produces progressive dysfunction rather than a stable congenital coordination difference.
Original mutation research
A 2017 PLOS ONE study used whole-exome sequencing on 11 DNA samples: three NAD-affected Papillons, parents associated with the affected family material, and six unaffected Papillon controls. The study identified PLA2G6 c.1579G>A as the candidate causal missense variant.
The researchers then expanded genotyping. In one major assay they assessed 3 NAD cases, relatives, and 57 unaffected controls, and later tested an additional affected Papillon–Chihuahua mix, 82 unaffected Papillons, 49 unaffected Chihuahuas, one unaffected mix, and 118 unaffected dogs of other breeds. The disease-associated dogs were homozygous for the variant while the unaffected dogs in those tested groups were wild type in the reported results.
The study design supports a strong causal relationship, but it was not a random Papillon population survey. It should not be used to state that a certain percentage of Papillons worldwide carry NAD.
Clinical pattern
Royal Kennel Club guidance describes affected dogs as typically becoming unwell between roughly six months and one year, with progressive neurologic signs such as abnormal gait, behavior or responsiveness changes, visual problems, loss of muscle, and loss of normal control. Earlier parent-club reports include affected puppies with ataxia and tremors.
Inheritance
The condition is described as autosomal recessive. Clear-to-carrier mating can avoid genetically affected puppies for this variant while preserving useful genetic diversity, provided the test and parentage are reliable. Carrier-to-carrier matings risk producing genetically affected puppies and should be avoided.
Screening status
NAD DNA is one of the available US CHIC health electives and a current UK Best Practice test. That gives breeders in both regions a practical tool, although the formal program structure differs.
Von Willebrand disease type I
Von Willebrand factor is important for normal blood clotting. Deficiency or dysfunction can lead to excessive bleeding. The Royal Kennel Club currently lists vWD type I DNA testing as a Best Practice test for Papillons.
Possible signs
RKC guidance lists nosebleeds, gum bleeding, prolonged bleeding during reproductive events, prolonged umbilical bleeding, excessive bleeding after surgery or trauma, and blood in urine or stool among possible signs. Clinical expression can vary substantially.
Inheritance in the current UK scheme
The Royal Kennel Club describes the Papillon-relevant vWD1 test within an autosomal-recessive framework. Under that model, a dog requires two abnormal copies to be genetically affected, while a one-copy dog is considered a carrier. Because von Willebrand disease biology and laboratory interpretation can differ between variants and breeds, owners should use the result specifically for the test performed rather than generalizing from another breed's vWD genetics.
DNA result versus current bleeding status
A DNA test does not replace clinical assessment when a dog is bleeding. Before surgery, tell the veterinary team about any history of prolonged bleeding and provide the actual genetic report. A veterinarian may use additional laboratory testing when clinically indicated.
Cardiac screening
Cardiac examination appears prominently in US Papillon health guidance. On the current PCA CHIC page, owners can use either an OFA Basic Cardiac or Advanced Cardiac examination, performed at a minimum age of one year, as the required health elective. AKC's breed-health summary also lists cardiac examination among the national parent club's recommended tests.
Basic versus Advanced OFA cardiac exams
OFA maintains separate Basic and Advanced cardiac databases. Basic certification is primarily based on auscultation and can receive a normal adult certification at 12 months or older. Because acquired disease can appear later, adult-onset Basic clearances are valid for one year and annual examination is recommended.
Advanced certification is performed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist and includes echocardiography for the current advanced program. Congenital clearance can be permanent, while the adult-onset component is time-limited because later disease remains possible.
Do not turn screening into a disease claim
The existence of a cardiac screening recommendation does not establish one specific heart disease prevalence in every Papillon population. This guide does not assign a breed-wide percentage without an appropriate contemporary population study. Owners should report murmurs, fainting, exercise intolerance, altered breathing, persistent cough, or unusual fatigue for veterinary assessment.
Juvenile cataracts and research limits
The PCA Health & Genetics Committee maintains a juvenile-cataract research page and has supported collection of DNA and family samples from diagnosed Papillons. That is useful evidence that cataracts have been important enough within the breed community to justify targeted research.
However, an active research project is not the same as a validated breed-wide DNA test. The PCA page describes sample collection goals and incomplete recruitment rather than an established causal mutation available for routine diagnosis. A guide should therefore not advertise a “Papillon juvenile cataract DNA clear” status unless and until a validated, recognized test exists for the specific condition.
Clinical ophthalmic screening remains important. Cataracts vary by cause and age of onset, and not every cataract is inherited. If a breeder reports cataract history in relatives, ask for ophthalmologist records, age at diagnosis, and whether the specific cataract was considered inherited.
Current health testing by region
The United States and United Kingdom currently use different Papillon screening frameworks. Both can inform responsible breeding, but they should never be merged into a fictional universal checklist.
United States: current PCA / CHIC framework
According to the current Papillon Club of America Health & Genetics Committee CHIC page, a Papillon needs permanent identification plus the following:
- CAER eye examination: PCA recommends screening every two years; no minimum age is listed on the current CHIC page.
- Patellar luxation evaluation: OFA certificate with a minimum age of one year.
- At least one health elective: OFA Basic Cardiac at one year or older; OFA Advanced Cardiac at one year or older; Pap-PRA1 DNA registered with OFA; or NAD DNA registered with OFA.
PCA's health site was still actively updating PRA1, NAD, and CHIC records in April 2026, which supports treating this current CHIC page as the operative parent-club source. Older PCA material still exists that describes eyes, patellas, and hearts as a fixed trio. Buyers should therefore check the current CHIC requirements rather than relying on an old PDF or breeder memory.
What a CHIC number means
The current PCA page explicitly states that not all results must be normal for a CHIC number to be issued. Public abnormal results can still qualify. A CHIC number therefore proves completion/public disclosure under the program—not a perfect bill of health. Open each result and note date, age, method, and finding.
United Kingdom: current Royal Kennel Club framework
The current RKC breed page separates Good Practice from Best Practice.
Good Practice currently includes:

For adult breeding dogs in the UK eye scheme, RKC guidance recommends examination within 12 months before mating, especially where inherited eye disease can develop later. It also recommends a final eye examination at around eight years for dogs that have been used for breeding.
The key regional difference
The US framework gives patella and clinical eye screening fixed CHIC status and lets the breeder choose one elective from cardiac/PRA1/NAD. The UK framework makes Pap-PRA1 a Good Practice priority and places NAD, vWD1, and clinical eyes in Best Practice. Patella and cardiac are not listed in the current Papillon UK Good/Best Practice columns. That does not prove those body systems are irrelevant in Britain; it means the formal national program is different.
DNA testing and responsible breeding genetics
DNA tests are most useful when the breeder understands exactly what they measure. A “clear panel” can sound impressive while containing many variants irrelevant to Papillons and omitting the phenotype tests that matter.
Pap-PRA1
The CNGB1-associated Pap-PRA1 test identifies the known recessive retinal variant described in Papillon and Phalène research. A clear dog is not thereby cleared of every inherited eye disorder. Clinical eye examination remains necessary.
NAD-PLA2G6
The PLA2G6 test identifies the variant strongly associated with Papillon neuroaxonal dystrophy. Under the recessive model, carrier-to-clear breeding can avoid affected puppies. A dog that develops neurologic signs still requires veterinary diagnosis because many other diseases can cause ataxia or weakness.
vWD1
The current UK scheme recognizes vWD1 DNA testing for Papillons. The result should be interpreted using the exact laboratory and registry guidance for the tested variant. A genetic label does not substitute for clinical evaluation of active bleeding.
Clear by parentage
Some registries and laboratories permit genetic status to be inferred from tested parents under defined rules. Ask whether the puppy's result is direct or inferred, whether parentage was verified, how many generations the registry permits, and whether the result appears on the official health record.
Genetic diversity matters
For a straightforward recessive condition, carrier-to-clear mating can preserve a valuable dog without producing genetically affected puppies. Automatically removing every carrier from breeding can shrink the gene pool and increase selection pressure on unrelated problems. This is why the Royal Kennel Club explicitly includes genetic diversity in its Good Practice framework.
Do not use genetics to excuse phenotype
A DNA-clear dog with unstable patellas, poor temperament, abnormal eyes, or poor overall health is not automatically good breeding stock. Responsible selection combines test results with structure, behavior, reproductive health, longevity, older relatives, and the health of previous offspring.
Puppies, adults, seniors, and lifespan
Evidence-based lifespan
A large 2024 Scientific Reports study analyzed 584,734 dogs in the United Kingdom, including 284,734 recorded deaths, and estimated breed-specific survival across 155 recognized pure breeds. The Papillon had an estimated median survival of approximately 14.5 years in that dataset.
Median is not an individual promise. The study combined several UK data sources and includes censoring of dogs still alive at study completion. Geography, veterinary access, registration, insurance participation, genetics, accidents, body condition, and disease can all change individual outcome. The figure is best described as a UK population estimate.
Puppies
Early priorities are safe socialization, house training, handling, dental-care practice, recall, independence, grooming, comfortable car travel, and protection from disproportionate falls or rough play. A puppy should learn to walk and explore rather than spend most of life in arms.
Because some inherited neurologic and ocular conditions can be age dependent, a normal young puppy exam cannot answer every future health question. Parent testing, older relatives, and honest breeder follow-up remain valuable.
Adolescents
Adolescence can increase barking, environmental interest, speed, and selectivity around unfamiliar dogs. Reduce freedom temporarily rather than escalating punishment. Long lines, gates, high reinforcement, and structured rest preserve good habits while the dog matures.
Adults
Maintain a lean body condition, tooth care, regular exercise, training, and the appropriate repeat screening for breeding dogs. Keep emergency identification current. A tiny adult may still be highly athletic and should not be retired to the sofa simply because growth has finished.
Seniors
Long-lived small dogs can spend several years in senior life. Monitor dental comfort, vision, hearing, weight, muscle, heart function, mobility, sleep, cognitive changes, and toileting. More frequent veterinary review may be appropriate. Nonslip floors, low steps, warm bedding, and shorter but regular activity can preserve independence.
Spaying and neutering
There is no strong Papillon-specific evidence used in this guide that establishes one universally correct age for gonadectomy. The AVMA advises that optimal timing in dogs should be individualized according to breed, age, sex, health, reproductive risk, and circumstances.
For a Papillon, practical factors include accidental-mating prevention, management of heat cycles, reproductive disease, anesthesia, adult body condition, behavioral considerations, and the owner's ability to manage an intact dog. Small size alone is not a sufficient reason to choose an age without veterinary discussion.
After sterilization, monitor body weight and adjust food if energy needs fall. For intact dogs, maintain secure management and do not breed solely because the dog is registered, attractive, or genetically clear for one test. Breeding should follow the complete health and temperament picture.
Choosing a responsible breeder
A pedigree confirms registered ancestry; it does not independently prove health, temperament, ethical puppy raising, or breeder competence. A good breeder should be able to explain the mating, show verifiable records, discuss weaknesses, and remain available throughout the dog's life.
For a US breeder, verify the current CHIC components
- Permanent identification.
- Current/appropriately dated CAER eye examination.
- OFA patella evaluation completed at one year or older.
- At least one current CHIC elective: Basic Cardiac, Advanced Cardiac, Pap-PRA1 DNA, or NAD DNA.
- Ask why the breeder selected that elective and whether additional relevant testing was performed.
A breeder can exceed CHIC minimums. In a breed with recognized PRA and NAD tests, buyers may reasonably prefer to see the genetic status even if the breeder used a cardiac exam as the formal elective. Minimum program completion and an ideal individual breeding plan are not always identical.

- “Vet checked” presented as equivalent to CHIC or formal screening.
- A CHIC number presented as proof that every result was normal.
- Only a large commercial DNA panel with no patella or clinical eye assessment.
- Extreme emphasis on producing the smallest possible adult.
- Marketing “teacup Papillon” as an official size variety.
- No awareness of Pap-PRA1 or NAD genetics.
- No willingness to discuss bleeding or eye history in the family.
- Fearful or aggressive adults dismissed as normal “small-dog attitude.”
- Puppies raised with little household exposure or no safe independence training.
- Guarantees that testing makes inherited disease impossible.
Rescue and adoption
An adult rescue Papillon or Papillon-type dog can be an excellent choice when temperament, size, and daily needs are already more visible. Background may be incomplete, so assess the individual dog rather than assuming every behavior is a breed trait.
Ask about knees, gait, vision in dim light, previous eye diagnoses, heart murmurs, bleeding history, dental disease, seizures or neurologic signs, medications, handling, other animals, children, barking, and alone time. Obtain all available veterinary records and microchip information.
Health testing after adoption
DNA testing may be useful if genetic status is unknown, especially when the result could inform breeding—if breeding is even appropriate—or clarify family risk. For a pet, clinical priorities may be more immediate: dental examination, patella assessment, eye comfort, heart auscultation, vaccination/parasite plan, and body condition.
Behavior decompression
Do not flood a newly adopted small dog with visitors and handling. Establish safe sleeping space, predictable meals, toileting, and gentle routine. Build trust through choice and reinforcement. A dog that has learned to defend itself when picked up may need a cooperative handling plan rather than repeated forced lifting.
Daily life, travel, and costs
A realistic day
A healthy adult Papillon may begin with a toilet outing and short walk, then breakfast partly used for training. During the day the dog should have opportunities to rest rather than constant stimulation. Later walks, sniffing, play, or training can provide purposeful activity. Short grooming and tooth care fit easily into daily routines when taught cooperatively.
Working households
A mature Papillon can adapt to many schedules, but puppies need frequent toilet breaks and gradual independence. A full day alone with no break is not an appropriate default for a young puppy. Daycare is optional and may be physically risky where playgroups are much larger or poorly matched.
Travel
Small size makes the breed relatively portable, but secure restraint still matters. Use a properly sized carrier or tested vehicle restraint rather than allowing the dog to ride loose or on a driver's lap. Introduce carriers positively before travel. In warm conditions, never leave the dog in a parked vehicle.
Airline and border rules change frequently. Check the carrier, destination authority, microchip, vaccination, and documentation requirements before travel rather than relying on a static breed guide.
Costs
Food volume may be low, but small dogs are not automatically inexpensive. Budget for preventive veterinary care, dentistry, insurance or an emergency fund, specialist eye examinations, patella assessment, cardiac screening where relevant, DNA testing, training, grooming tools, secure carriers and harnesses, boarding or pet care, and potential orthopedic or ophthalmic treatment.
Dental procedures, specialist cardiology, eye surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurologic investigation, and emergency care can cost far more than routine food. Evaluate insurance before a problem is documented because hereditary and pre-existing-condition terms vary.

You may be ready for a Papillon if...
- You want a small dog that still enjoys learning and activity.

Who should probably choose another breed?
A Papillon may be a poor fit for a household that wants an unusually quiet dog, includes very young children who cannot reliably handle a tiny animal safely, has uncontrolled rough large dogs, or expects a Toy breed to require almost no training. It is also a poor choice for someone attracted mainly to extreme miniaturization rather than health and temperament.

It can occur, but mixed or semi-erect ear carriage does not meet the formal ideal. AKC faults one ear up or partly down, and FCI treats intermediate carriage as a serious fault.
Do Papillons shed?
Yes, although the standard specifies no undercoat. Regular combing removes loose hair and prevents tangles in fringes and furnishings.
Do Papillons need professional grooming?
Not necessarily. Many owners can maintain the natural coat at home with combing, bathing, nail care, ear-fringe care, and hygiene. Show presentation may require more specialized preparation.
Are Papillons hypoallergenic?
No breed can be guaranteed hypoallergenic. Papillons produce normal canine allergens from skin, saliva, and other biological material even though their coat lacks an undercoat.
Do Papillons bark a lot?
Many are alert and vocal. Barking can be reduced through management, reinforcement of quiet alternatives, and appropriate activity, but a completely silent Papillon is not a realistic breed expectation.
How much exercise does a Papillon need?
Needs vary. A healthy adult usually benefits from daily walking, sniffing, play, and training. Athletic individuals may comfortably do much more than a basic Toy-breed routine when conditioned gradually.
Are Papillons good at agility?
Many are highly trainable and athletic, and the breed has a strong history of participation in agility and obedience. Equipment and progression should be appropriate to the individual dog's size and conditioning.
What health tests should a US Papillon breeder perform?
Current PCA CHIC requires permanent ID, CAER eyes, OFA patella at one year or older, and at least one elective: Basic Cardiac, Advanced Cardiac, Pap-PRA1 DNA, or NAD DNA.
What health tests are recommended in the UK?
Current RKC Good Practice includes genetic diversity and Pap-PRA1 DNA. Best Practice adds NAD-PLA2G6, vWD1, and BVA/RKC/ISDS eye screening.
Does a CHIC number mean every result is normal?
No. PCA's current CHIC guidance explicitly allows a CHIC number when required results are completed and disclosed even if an authorized result is abnormal.
What is Pap-PRA1?
It is a recessive progressive retinal atrophy associated with a CNGB1 frameshift variant identified in Papillons and Phalènes. It can affect vision, particularly beginning with dim-light difficulty.
What is neuroaxonal dystrophy in Papillons?
NAD is a serious progressive neurologic disease associated with a PLA2G6 variant. It is described as autosomal recessive and often begins in young dogs.
Why is eye examination needed if the parents are PRA1 clear?
Because Pap-PRA1 testing addresses one genetic retinal disorder only. Clinical eye exams can identify cataracts and other ocular abnormalities not ruled out by that DNA result.
How long do Papillons live?
A large 2024 UK multi-source study estimated median survival at about 14.5 years for Papillons. Individual lifespan can be shorter or longer.
Is there a teacup Papillon?
No official AKC, FCI, or Royal Kennel Club standard reviewed here recognizes a “teacup” Papillon variety. Extreme smallness should not be valued above health, soundness, and temperament.
