Alaskan Malamute Grooming
The Alaskan Malamute coat is functional but high-volume. Regular brushing removes loose undercoat, separates dense areas, and helps owners notice skin changes, parasites, mats, or foreign material. During seasonal coat shedding, the amount of undercoat released can be substantial and daily grooming may be useful.
Shedding

Alaskan Malamute Nutrition and Weight

These sources answer different questions.
Current U.S. parent-club requirements emphasize hip evaluation, eye examination, and DNA testing for Alaskan Malamute polyneuropathy. Additional U.S. recommendations include elbows, congenital cardiac disease, thyroid abnormalities, cone degeneration DNA, and primary ciliary dyskinesia DNA. Current U.K. guidance uses a different structure, with AMPN under Good Practice and cone degeneration, elbows, eyes, and hips under Best Practice.
Health-tested parents reduce uncertainty but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy. Hip and elbow dysplasia are complex traits; some disorders appear later in life; and a DNA test only addresses the variant it was designed to detect.
Hip Dysplasia
Canine hip dysplasia is a developmental disorder involving abnormal hip laxity and joint incongruity. Genetics are important, but the clinical outcome is influenced by multiple factors including growth, body weight, and environment. Some dogs with radiographic changes show few signs, while others develop pain, reduced activity, lameness, difficulty rising, or osteoarthritis.
Hip screening is a central Alaskan Malamute breeding recommendation in both the United States and United Kingdom. In the OFA system, final hip certification is based on radiographs taken at 24 months or older and evaluated by veterinary radiologists. Preliminary evaluations can be submitted earlier, but a preliminary result should not be represented as a final adult certification.
The BVA/RKC Hip Dysplasia Scheme can be used from 12 months of age. Each hip receives component scores, producing a total score; lower scores indicate less radiographic evidence of dysplasia. Results should be considered in breed context rather than reduced to a vague statement that hips were “checked.”
Screening supports population improvement but does not make inheritance deterministic. Large voluntary screening databases have shown long-term improvement in orthopedic phenotypes with selection, yet such databases are selected populations and should not be treated as exact breed prevalence surveys.
Elbow Dysplasia
Elbow dysplasia is an umbrella term for developmental abnormalities that can contribute to forelimb pain and arthritis. Elbow evaluation is recommended by the Alaskan Malamute Club of America and is part of The Royal Kennel Club's current Best Practice Health Standard for the Alaskan Malamute. Under the BVA/RKC scheme, dogs must be at least one year old; elbows are graded from 0 to 3 and the higher grade of the two elbows becomes the overall grade. BVA recommends breeding from dogs with grade 0 elbows.
As with hips, a normal screen reduces known risk but does not guarantee every offspring will remain free of orthopedic disease.
Alaskan Malamute Polyneuropathy
Alaskan Malamute polyneuropathy, usually abbreviated AMPN, is one of the breed's most important DNA-testable inherited disorders. It affects peripheral nerves and can produce exercise intolerance, gait abnormalities, weakness, muscle wasting, reduced reflexes, and in some dogs laryngeal dysfunction that changes the voice or breathing sound.
A 2013 study investigated a selected international group of 102 Alaskan Malamutes, including affected dogs, obligate carriers, and healthy controls. Researchers identified a mutation in NDRG1 causing a Gly98Val amino-acid substitution. Under the study's clinical classification, affected dogs were homozygous for the variant, obligate carriers were heterozygous, and the inheritance pattern was consistent with autosomal recessive disease.
The study's affected dogs developed signs during youth, with onset reported from 3 to 19 months in that selected group and a median onset of 13.5 months. These numbers describe the cases in that study, not a timetable for every genetically affected dog and not population prevalence.
The study also included Alaskan Malamutes with neurologic problems from other causes that did not have the AMPN genotype. That is a useful limitation: a clear AMPN DNA result does not mean an Alaskan Malamute can never develop weakness or another neurologic disease.
AMPN DNA testing is currently part of the required U.S. parent-club screening set and Good Practice in the current U.K. Health Standard.
Cone Degeneration
Cone degeneration in the Alaskan Malamute is an inherited retinal disorder that affects cone photoreceptors. Cones are important for vision in bright light and color discrimination. Affected dogs can show day blindness and light sensitivity while retaining better vision in dim conditions because rod function is relatively preserved.
Research identified a large genomic deletion that includes the CNGB3 gene in affected Alaskan Malamutes, supporting a DNA test for this form of disease. The inheritance pattern is autosomal recessive.
There is an important scientific limitation. In the foundational research, one day-blind Alaskan Malamute was homozygous normal for the identified deletion. The authors discussed possible genetic heterogeneity or another cause of the phenotype. Therefore, a clear result for the known deletion does not prove that every possible cause of day blindness has been excluded.
Cone degeneration DNA testing is currently recommended by the U.S. parent club and included in U.K. Best Practice for the Alaskan Malamute.
Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia
Primary ciliary dyskinesia is an inherited disorder of the microscopic cilia that help clear mucus and debris from the respiratory system. Dysfunction can predispose affected dogs to persistent or recurrent respiratory disease. Clinical signs in the published Alaskan Malamute cases included chronic nasal discharge, coughing, and severe respiratory changes.
A 2019 genetic study investigated an affected Swiss litter and an unrelated U.S. case. The researchers analyzed three affected Alaskan Malamutes and a much larger control group, identifying a one-base deletion in NME5 that creates a frameshift and was the most likely causal variant. The inheritance pattern was consistent with autosomal recessive disease.
The study is strong molecular evidence for this specific variant but not a prevalence survey. Only three affected cases were central to the association, so the data do not justify a claim that primary ciliary dyskinesia is common across the modern breed.
DNA testing for Alaskan Malamute-type primary ciliary dyskinesia is currently recommended by the Alaskan Malamute Club of America as an additional test. It is not listed in the current U.K. Alaskan Malamute Health Standard reviewed for this guide.
Chondrodysplasia
Alaskan Malamute chondrodysplasia, historically referred to in breed-club material as inherited dwarfism, is a documented skeletal disorder involving abnormal cartilage and bone development. Affected dogs can develop shortened, bowed, or malformed limbs and disproportionate stature.
Historical breeding research established a simple recessive inheritance pattern, meaning clinically normal carriers can produce affected puppies when bred to another carrier. The Alaskan Malamute Club of America has maintained a detailed historical account of the research and breeding program used to reduce the problem.
Modern interpretation requires caution. The current U.S. and U.K. baseline health-testing lists reviewed for this guide do not include a routine Alaskan Malamute chondrodysplasia DNA test, and the parent-club material does not present a currently established causal mutation equivalent to AMPN, cone degeneration, or the NME5 primary ciliary dyskinesia variant. Do not confuse generic laboratory tests called “chondrodysplasia” with a validated Alaskan Malamute test without checking the exact gene, variant, and breed evidence.
Thyroid Disease
Thyroid abnormalities are included in the Alaskan Malamute Club of America's recommended additional screening. OFA's thyroid registry focuses on autoimmune thyroiditis, an inheritable cause of hypothyroidism.
Clinical signs of thyroid dysfunction can be nonspecific and may include changes in body weight, coat, skin, activity, or other systems. Diagnosis should therefore come from veterinary assessment and appropriate laboratory testing rather than from appearance alone.
OFA adult thyroid certification begins at 12 months. Because autoimmune thyroid disease can develop later, OFA recommends repeat evaluation at defined adult ages. A single normal young-adult result should not be interpreted as a lifetime guarantee.
Seizures and Epilepsy
The Alaskan Malamute Club of America includes epilepsy among conditions breeders should consider in family history and health decision-making. This makes seizure history relevant, but the authoritative material reviewed for this guide does not provide a reliable modern breed-wide prevalence figure. It would therefore be misleading to label epilepsy universally common in the Alaskan Malamute.
A seizure can have many causes, including metabolic disease, toxins, structural brain disease, and idiopathic epilepsy. A dog with a suspected seizure needs veterinary investigation. No current routine Alaskan Malamute DNA test in the baseline U.S. or U.K. programs can certify a dog as free of all seizure disorders.
For puppy buyers, honest pedigree information matters. Ask whether seizures have occurred in parents, siblings, previous litters, or close relatives and how those cases were investigated.
Alopecia X and Coat Changes
The Alaskan Malamute Club of America discusses Alopecia X, sometimes informally called “coat funk,” as a breed-relevant coat disorder. It can involve abnormal hair loss and coat change, often in a patterned or symmetrical distribution. The exact genetic cause remains unresolved in the parent-club material reviewed for this guide.
Hair loss should not be diagnosed visually as Alopecia X. Endocrine disease, parasites, infection, allergy, trauma, and other dermatologic problems can produce similar signs. Veterinary investigation is necessary before applying a label.
There is no current baseline Alaskan Malamute DNA test for Alopecia X in the U.S. or U.K. breed-screening programs reviewed here, so breeder claims of being “genetically clear for all coat problems” deserve skepticism.
Cardiac Screening
Screening for congenital cardiac disease is part of the Alaskan Malamute Club of America's recommended additional testing. OFA maintains cardiac databases with different examination levels. A basic adult cardiac evaluation uses auscultation, while advanced cardiac evaluation requires a veterinary cardiologist and echocardiography under the program's rules.
The U.S. parent-club recommendation should not be rewritten as though every international registry requires the same cardiac protocol. The current U.K. Alaskan Malamute Health Standard reviewed for this guide does not list cardiac screening among its breed-specific Good or Best Practice items.
Owners should seek veterinary assessment for fainting, collapse, unusual exercise intolerance, persistent cough, or other concerning cardiopulmonary signs rather than relying on an old breeding certificate as proof of current health.

A CHIC number should never be described as an “all clear” certificate. Under OFA's CHIC program, a dog receives a CHIC number after completing the breed-specific requirements in effect and making the required results public. The results do not all have to be normal. Requirements can also change over time, so buyers should look at the actual individual test results, not only the presence of a CHIC number.
DNA Testing and Genetic Diversity
DNA testing is most useful when the exact disease, variant, inheritance pattern, and breed validation are known. For the Alaskan Malamute, current programs make especially clear use of AMPN and cone degeneration testing, while the U.S. parent club also recommends the Alaskan Malamute-type primary ciliary dyskinesia test.
For a straightforward autosomal recessive disease, a clear dog has no copies of the tested variant, a carrier has one copy, and a genetically affected dog has two copies. A carrier bred to a clear dog should not produce genetically affected puppies for that specific validated recessive variant, although carrier offspring can occur.
This is why responsible breeding does not always mean removing every carrier immediately. The Royal Kennel Club specifically emphasizes genetic diversity. Excluding every carrier of every recessive variant can unnecessarily narrow a breed's gene pool. When a reliable test exists, a carefully selected carrier can be bred to a clear mate while preserving valuable unrelated traits and avoiding affected puppies for that variant.
DNA panels also have limits. A “clear” commercial panel does not evaluate hip or elbow conformation, perform an eye examination, diagnose thyroid function, assess the heart, or rule out every neurologic disorder. Tests labeled with similar disease names can involve different genes in different breeds, so buyers should verify that the test is validated for the Alaskan Malamute.
Alaskan Malamute Lifespan
Lifespan is best discussed with a clear source rather than repeating a generic range. A 2024 peer-reviewed U.K. study combined records from 18 data sources and included 584,734 individual dogs, of which 284,734 were recorded as deceased. The study analyzed 155 pure breeds and crossbred dogs.
In the study's breed-specific supplementary table, the Alaskan Malamute group contained 1,980 dogs, with 842 recorded deaths/events. Estimated median survival was 11.3 years, with a reported 95% confidence interval of approximately 11.1 to 11.8 years.
This is a useful evidence-based estimate, not a universal prediction. The study was U.K.-based and the authors discuss differences among data sources, population representation, and other limitations. It should not be used to claim that every Alaskan Malamute worldwide has an 11.3-year lifespan. Individual longevity varies with genetics, disease, body condition, accidents, preventive care, and many other factors.
Alaskan Malamute Puppies and Adolescence

What to Verify in the United Kingdom
Check current Royal Kennel Club Health Standard results. AMPN DNA is part of Good Practice, while Best Practice adds cone degeneration DNA, elbow grading, eye examination, and hip scoring. Confirm the date of the eye examination because the current guidance links it to the period before mating.
Why Older Relatives Matter
Late-onset disease cannot be excluded by a normal examination in a young breeding dog. Ask about parents, grandparents, siblings, half-siblings, previous litters, and causes of death in older relatives. Family information is especially useful for problems without a complete DNA test, including seizures, thyroid disease, coat disorders, and some orthopedic or cardiac conditions.
How Puppies Should Be Raised
Puppies should have clean housing, appropriate veterinary care, positive human handling, gradual exposure to household life, safe novelty, and opportunities for normal movement and social development. Adopting an adult Alaskan Malamute can be rewarding, particularly for an owner who prefers to assess an established size and temperament. History may be incomplete, so evaluate the individual rather than assuming breed-standard behavior.

Myth: “An Alaskan Malamute is just a large Siberian Husky.”

Myth: “The Alaskan Malamute needs dominance training.”
